Connie Sue (Shirk) Hurley, 83, of DeGraff passed away peacefully at 8:22 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at home with her husband and sons by her side. She was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio on December 20, 1942, to the late Charles and Jean Shirk.

Connie graduated from Huntsville High School in 1960, where she was a cheerleader, class officer, and active in the “H” Association, Operetta, Chorus, Band, Latin Club, and SOS Club.

On December 16, 1960, she married Darel Hurley in Huntsville, Ohio. They resided in Huntsville and she worked in the keypunch department at Superfoods for the first several years of their marriage, including the time Darel was in Vietnam. They moved to DeGraff and together started Hurley Excavating Company in 1970, with Connie operating the bulldozer and excavator in the early years and continuing to keep the books for the next 47 years.

Connie is survived by her husband Darel, two sons and their wives, Greg & Jami Hurley, and Doug & Dina Hurley, all of DeGraff. Connie and Darel were blessed with 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren: Megan (Colman) Salmons of Columbus and their children Owen and Laney, Jacob (Caroline) Hurley of DeGraff and their children Regan, Madison and Nathan, Courtney (Andy) Heath of Quincy and their children Grady and Lane, Kyle (Hannah) Hurley of Springfield, Georgia and their children Danny, Millie and Lowen, Monica (Roscoe) Burden of West Liberty and their children Henry and Brooks, and Mya Hurley of DeGraff; a sister, Linda (Pat) Jenkins of Piqua; a brother, Garry Shirk of West Chester; sisters-in-law, Betty Dickerson of Belle Center, Shirley Bell of Bellefontaine, Barb (Greg) Luzader of Huntsville, Millicent (David) Bray of Huntsville, Debra Shirk of Toledo, and Kelly Cooper-Hurley of Huntsville; a brother-in-law, Russell (LeaDel) Hurley of Huntsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Connie was preceded in death by two brothers, Chuck Shirk and infant brother Robert Shirk; and brothers-in-law, Bill Hurley, Jack Hurley, Jim Dickerson, and Bill Bell.

Connie's greatest joys in life were being a wife, mother, homemaker, grandma and great-grandma. She kept a large garden, raising vegetables to preserve and enjoyed working in her flowerbeds. She collected antiques, particularly Coin Glass and Depression Glass, and enjoyed tea parties with her granddaughters using her fancy teapots. Connie was known for her cooking, with her Carrot Cake, Mock Chicken (for Mya) Lasagna, Beef Stroganoff, delicious pies, and holiday sugar cookies being some of the family favorites. Every Memorial Day for over 30 years, she hosted the Hurley Family Fishing Tournament, which included a hand-made traveling trophy awarded to the winner. Connie was an excellent seamstress and quilter, giving quilts and wall hangings made with love to all her kids and grandkids. She was a member of the Logan Piecemakers for many years and won several ribbons for her quilts at the Logan County Fair. Together, she and Darel spent their free time hunting mushrooms, arrowheads and dancing; and they never missed an opportunity to watch their grandkids participate in activities and sporting events.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 210 W. Hayes Street in DeGraff. A private family funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Philadelphia Cemetery in Bellefontaine, Ohio.
